Rachel

Picture
Rachel is named after her great-great grandmother, Rachel Garboushian George.  Rachel Garboushian was born in Kessab, Syria in 1889.  As a 20 year old she fled Armenia during the Turkish Massacre and, accompanied by her elderly aunt, she traveled by ship to Ellis Island.  There she met Isaiah George who would become her husband and life-long friend. 37-year old Isaiah had escaped Armenia years earlier and, after setting himself up as a diamond-cutter in Philadelphia, wrote back to his parents in Armenia requesting a wife who was "a Christian" and who was "beautiful." Though a church wedding had been planned, immigration authorities decreed that Rachel could not enter the country unless she were married to Isaiah. A man of action, Isaiah rounded up a German minister, a Catholic nun, and a black cleaning woman.  The wedding proceeded immediately on Ellis Island, with the latter two as witnesses. Rachel and Isaiah went on to have 15 children, 10 of whom lived to be adults. Their eldest son, Emmanuel, was Sarah's paternal grandfather.

In Hebrew, Rachel means "pure like a lamb."  Our beautiful Rachel will always remind us of the pure faith of a child.  We pray that like Rachel George, Rachel Gloria will follow her Savior faithfully as she discovers His mercy and protection.

Gloria

Picture
Glory be to God on high
And on earth peace, goodwill towards men,
We praise thee, we bless thee,
we worship thee, we glorify thee,
we give thanks to thee, for thy great glory
O Lord God, heavenly King,God the Father Almighty.
O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesus Christ;
O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
that takest away the sins of the world,have mercy upon us.
Thou that takest away the sins of the world,have mercy upon us.
Thou that takest away the sins of the world,receive our prayer.
Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father,have mercy upon us.
For thou only art holy;
thou only art the Lord;
thou only, O Christ, art most high
in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.
